3rd GuideStar International Assembly 2008 - From Local to Global: The Importance of CSO Information

17/10/08

In an interdependent world the critical issues we face such as climate change, energy, infectious disease, poverty and migration to name a few – have local, national, regional and global significance. At every level, citizens through their civil society organisations (CSOs) play vital roles in researching, educating, advocating and delivering services to resolve these issues. Action by global decision-makers is needed, but our interrelatedness and the need to engage these issues “where we live” underscores the need to empower CSO initiatives at every level, the local level perhaps most importantly of all. However, solutions cannot be implemented or resources allocated effectively without broad-based knowledge about conditions, solutions and initiatives across and within borders.

The 3rd GuideStar Assembly, to be held in London on the 2-3 December 2008, will convene civil society leaders around the world to discuss how information can empower civil society and decision-makers at all levels to rise to these challenges confronting us today.

Key issues to be discussed at the Assembly include:

  • Engaging Citizens in Policy and Social Action: The role of information and technology
  • What Should Civil Society Organisations Report?
  • The Impact of New Media on CSOs and the Reporting of their Work
  • Rhetoric to Reality: Developing a GuideStar Africa strategy

Date: 2nd – 3rd December 2008
Venue: 2 Temple Place, London, WC2R 3BD, United Kingdom
