Strengthening Civic Engagement through Information

GuideStar US

Founded in 1994, GuideStar is the definitive source of information on 1.7 million nonprofits in the United States. Information is derived from Forms 990 that all nonprofit organisations in the US are required to submit annually. Nonprofits can also update their entry through the only GuideStar information form. Before GuideStar, there was no central source of information on U.S. nonprofits, but today government policy makers, donors, researchers and the media, to name a few, all look to the easily accessible and non evaluative information available on GuideStar for accurate and reliable reports on nonprofits. Acclaimed as a useful source of information for the public, www.guidestar.org has been made part of the permanent research collection on information technology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, which includes the most innovative applications of technology.
